The Workers’ Center of Central New York stands in solidarity with THE General Body, the coalition of student organizations pushing for diversity and transparency at the Syracuse University. As the sit-in on Crouse-Hinds enters its third week, we wish to express our admiration for the extraordinary leadership, courage and commitment exemplified by these students and to call upon the Chancellor to immediately and meaningfully respond to the students’ demands.
The Workers’ Center of Central New York is a membership-based, grassroots organization engaged in organizing, leadership development, popular education and policy advocacy to defend and expand the rights of low-wage, workers, stem the degradation of work, and advance the struggle for social and economic justice. We know that systemic change does not happen in the absence of concerted pressure and collective action. Thus, we applaud THE General Body for its campus-wide organizing and coalition-building and for putting forth a vision, and demand, for a more just, diverse, and transparent University, one that is responsive to the needs of all students.
As a local non-profit organization, we have benefitted immensely from the time, energy, and talents of many professors and students at Syracuse University. We are therefore particularly invested in Syracuse University’s relationship with, and commitment to, the broader community. We join with students and faculty concerned about the increased corporatization of the University and urge the Chancellor and Board of Trustees to follow the student’s lead in crafting a university oriented to civic engagement, social justice, and the public good.
