Starting on May 15th,Farm workers and their allies will embark on a two week long 200 mile march from Long Island, NY all the way to Albany, NY to demand equal rights for farm workers. Currently, farmworkers are excluded from basic labor protections including collective bargaining, overtime pay, and a day of rest. All along the 200 mile route, people will be holding local marches and rallies to also demand justice for farmworkers. The WCCNY is organizing a solidarity march on May 26 at 12pm in Syracuse, NY. We will gather on Forman Park (located between East Genesee and Almond St.) at 12pm for a rally to celebrate farmworkers contribution to our communities and then we will march to the New York State Office building to urge elected officials to vote for the passage of the Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act which extend labor protections and rights to farm workers.
We are collecting 2500 postcards from community members urging governor Andrew Cuomo and senator John Flanagan to pass the Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act which would extend basic labor protections to farmworkers. Workers’ Center members and allies will be personally delivering the postcards in Albany on June 1st.during Farmworker Albany Day.
Here is Worker Center’s board member Rosa filling out one of the postcards demanding Justice for Farmworkers. Take a lead from Rosa, and come to our office to fill out postcards! After you fill out your postcards, grab a stack of postcards to distribute to your classmates, co-workers, neighbors, family, friends! We want to send a message loud and clear to Albany that farmworkers deserve basic labor protections!
