WCCNY to sponsor press conference about failures of Workers Comp System

Workers and their Advocates Blast Failures of Workers Comp System

and Corporate Domination of Overhaul Process

Syracuse, NY -In late August, New York’s Workers Compensation Board began a process to repair its century-old system. It called this effort the Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) project, with the stated goal to “improve the experience of injured workers and employers” in New York’s workers’ compensation system.

So far, worker participation in the process has been minimal, with agendas tightly controlled by Deloitte, a multinational corporation hired as a consultant. While keeping its own profile and financial interests low, the company has worked through the Workers’ Compensation Board to convene meetings of insurance carriers, doctors, lawyers, and other stakeholders.

Workers and worker advocate organizations have been offered very little in the way of meaningful participation in this fast-track process. It appears that many of the decisions have already been made and are part of a public relations campaign on the Board’s own website.

The purpose of this press conference is to object to the way this process has been managed and to bring the voices of more working people into the process. At this press conference and at the meeting session that follows, workers and their advocates will “Give ‘Em Earful” about the changes that workers need that prevent workplace illness, injury and fatality, protect their rights, and improve their benefits.

It will also offer insight about how to improve the workplace safety and health of some of our state’s most vulnerable and exploited workers, many of whom do not even know what rights they have if they are seriously injured at the workplace.
