NY State fair vendor guilty of wage theft

The Federal Department of  Labor has ruled that Peter Karageorgis, a food vendor at last year’s NY State Fair will be fined $50,000 and must pay $115,900 in back wages to 11 guest workers and 2 US workers.

The Labor Department investigated complaints that Karageorgis employed guest workers and did not pay them minimum wage and overtime as stipulated by the law. The DOL was tipped off to the situation by the Workers’ Center of CNY.

It took the work of a lot of committed individuals and organizations to bring this injustice to light. There is still a civil class action pending that has the potential to benefit more workers who were exploited by this unscrupulous employer.
